Dear maxibasketball friends and players,
It is our honor to invite you to the next FIMBA European
maxiBasketball Championship in Zagreb 2010!
Zagreb is the capital of Croatia. According
to its historical tradition, cultural relations,
and its urban planning, Zagreb is a central
European city situated in the middle of the
triangle of Vienna, Budapest and Venice.
Its favorable geographic position in the
southwestern part of the Pannonian Basin, which
extends to the Alpine, Dinaric, Adriatic and Pannonic
regions, provides an excellent connection for traffic
between Central Europe and the Adriatic Sea.
The transport connections, concentration of industry,
scientific and research institutions and industrial tradition
underlie its leading economic position in Croatia. Zagreb
is the seat of the central government, administrative bodies and almost all government ministries.
Zagreb is also the hub of the business, academic, cultural, artistic and sporting worlds in Croatia. It
is a big centre of congress tourism, economic and business events, and trade fairs, not only in
Croatia but also in this part of Europe. |
Zagreb University was founded in the 17th century, and is one of the
oldest ones in Europe. Zagreb lives a rich cultural life, with more than
20 theatres, 3 concert halls, around 60 museums and art galleries.
Zagreb can offer its visitors the Baroque atmosphere of the Upper
Town, picturesque open-air markets,
diverse shopping facilities, an abundant
selection of crafts and a choice
vernacular cuisine.
Zagreb is a city of
green parks and walks, with many places to visit in the beautiful
surroundings. In spite of the rapid development of the economy and
transportation, it has retained its charm, and a relaxed feeling that
makes it a genuinely human city. |
Zagreb is also a sports city, from waterpolo, to handball to skiing.
You must have heard about our ski stars
Janica and Ivica Kostelić, and about the
World Cup races in skiing on Sljeme in
Zagreb, called Snow Queen Trophy.
Furthermore, the top scorer at the FIFA football World cup in
France 1998 was Davor Šuker, who played in FC Dinamo
Zagreb from 1989 till 1991.
We are very proud that two of the
best Croatian basketball players
played in BC Cibona Zagreb.
Krešimir Ćosić won with Cibona
the Europian cup in 1982 and
Dražen Petrović won the Europian
championship in 1985 and 1986 as well as the Europian cup in 1987
with the same club.
|
Also several other sports and recreational centers in Zagreb are
standing on your disposal, like Recreational Sports Center
Jarun, situated on Jarun Lake in the southwest of the city. There
are fine shingle beaches, a world-class regatta course, and a
jogging, cycling and rolerscating
lane around the lake, several
restaurants, many night clubs and a
discotheque. Its sports and
recreation opportunities include swimming, sunbathing, windsurfing,
angling and other water sports, but also beach volleyball, football,
basketball, handball, table tennis and minigolf. |
But most importantly, since the mentality of citizens of
Zagreb is friendly and welcoming, Zagreb is an
exceptionall host city. Therefore we all, from the city
management to the athletes and all citizens, expect to
see you in Zagreb. We are proud to be the next in line of host cities. And we
wish, dear maxibasketball friends and players, that during
the third week of July 2010 we will all together be the sports
citizens of the city of Zagreb! |

Zagreb was the organizer of great sports competitions, for example
the European Basketball Championship in 1989.
At the beginning of this year Zagreb hosted the World Handball
Championship 2009.
With Ivano Balić as a leading
player, Croatian national
team won the silver medal on this World Championship.
For this Championship city of Zagreb was finished the
Zagreb Arena in 2008 with 16,300 seats.
But, there are a lot of other sport halls in
Zagreb, like the Dražen Petrović
Basketball Hall and the Home of sport at
the Krešimir Ćosić square etc.
Besides organizing the 6th FIMBA
European maxiBasketball Championship
2010, Zagreb is also the host town of the
European Waterpolo Championship in
2010. |
